Infrastructure Projects 2014-2018

As a result of the recent growth and development in Cambridge Bay, the community has seen significant investment in capital projects and infrastructure development. Some of these projects include:

  • 2 x five-plex housing units, $2.5 million Nunavut Housing Corporation public housing, completion 2018
  • 6 x single family dwellings, $1.5 million built on spec by local contractors, completion 2018

 

  • 6 x single family dwellings, $1.5 million built on spec by local contractors, completed 2017
  • 3 x twelve-plex housing units, $10.2 million Government staff housing units for Health Centre staff, completed 2017

Canadian High Arctic Research Station:

  • $188 million project ($142 million for construction of the facility - $46 million for Science and Technology pilot projects in the community prior to the facility opening)
  • Project start 2010, completion summer 2017
  • Official grand opening to take place after the sealift, in October 2017
    • 1 x eight-plex housing unit, $2 million CHARS staff housing, completed 2017
    • 1 x duplex, $525,000 CHARS staff housing, completed 2017
    • 6 x single family dwellings, $1.75 million CHARS staff housing, completed 2016

Airport Upgrade Project (phase 1):

  • This was the first phase of a three phase Airport Improvement Master Plan. This phase included widening the runway, expanding the apron, upgrade and improve airport lighting and replacing the fuel distribution system.
  • $16 million project for airport upgrades and improvements
  • Start date 2013, completed 2016

Water System Project:

  • This project included a new water treatment plant, new intake pump house, upgrades and extensions to the waterline.
  • $12 million investment in the Cambridge Bay water system
  • Project Start 2013, completed 2016

Fuel Tank Farm:

  • This project constructed a new tank farm outside of the community core. The old fuel storage capacity was not sufficient to accommodate the projected growth of the community over the next five years. It will be decommissioned and the land will be reclaimed.
  • $22 million investment to construct a new Fuel Tank Farm
  • Project start 2012, completed 2015

Municipal Office:

  • $9.5 million project
  • Project Start 2013, completed 2015

Nunavut Arctic College Residence and Daycare:

  • This is a 2-phase project. Phase 1 was the construction of NAC residence. Phase 2 is currently going through the scoping process and is being evaluated. Phase 2 will see construction of a new NAC Campus and Mine Training Centre.
  • $10.5 million project
  • Project start 2013, completed 2015

Nunavut Housing Corporation:

  • This included construction of two 10-plex housing units (2 x $4.4 million). The first is a Government of Nunavut staff housing 10-plex. The second is a Nunavut Housing Corp public housing 10-plex.
  • $8.8 million project
  • Project Start 2013, completed 2015

Kitikmeot Inuit Association Office Building:

  • Home to Kitikmeot Inuit Association, Nunavut Tungavik Inc., and the Kitikmeot corporation
  • $20 - $25 million project
  • Project start 2012, completed 2014
