Biography...

Michelle Gillis is Mayor of the Municipality of Cambridge Bay.

Michelle is currently finishing up her first term as Mayor and fourth year on Hamlet Council.

An advocate for the participation of women in politics Michelle was one of the youngest ever Mayor’s in Nunavut. She was the first ever female elected to the position of Mayor for the community of Cambridge Bay. Before becoming Mayor she served on many local committees, boards and worked for many agencies as well as volunteered for non profit groups and sports clubs. Before becoming Mayor, Michelle worked for the Nunavut Housing Corporation for many years in both program development and finance. She has worked as an Accountant in the private sector and is currently earning credits towards her degree in political science through Carleton University. Born and raised in Cambridge Bay, Michelle is a true northerner spending her entire life in the Arctic. She also is very active in federal politics serving on Federal Council for the New Democratic Party representing the Nunavut Riding. She also helped in the formation of the NDP Aboriginal Commission. Michelle’s priorities include helping to battle hidden homelessness in the north, climate change, the affects on the environment as well as the promotion of economic development and tourism in the Arctic. Michelle is also a board member on the Nunavut Association of Municipalities representing the Kitikmeot Regional Mayor’s.

Michelle also has two young sons Ethan & Liam. She enjoys spending quality time with them at home and also takes them camping and fishing when not busy working.
